Capex Buyer

A strategic and operational role for a skilled procurement professional

As part of a major industrial organization, AkzoNobel’s Specialty Chemicals (SC) Business Area operates a substantial capital investments program. The European Capital Investments (CAPEX) buying team is based in the Netherlands and has an estimated annual spend of € 50 – € 100 million/year.

Your mission in this role is to co-manage a part of SC’s CAPEX portfolio together with the Spend Area Main Buyer and Local Buyers. Specifically, you plan and direct procurement within the projects, meeting the requirements of the business unit (BU) within Spend Area Strategy and with the approval of stakeholders.

Is this a challenge that matches your skills and ambitions? Do you have a good knowledge of supplier markets and product developments, and experience of buying for a technical organization? Can you combine the highest standards of project budgeting with the ability to understand the requirements of internal customers and external suppliers? Above all, can you perform outstanding and sustainable international CAPEX procurement within our fast moving, multinational and multicultural business environment?

If you offer all this and more we invite you to apply for the role of

Capex Buyer

AkzoNobel’s Specialty Chemicals business area encompasses a spectrum of chemicals expertise that is integral to a number of industries and high profile customers. Our rigorous approach to quality and our innovative and sustainable technologies have enabled us to achieve a leadership position in many markets worldwide. The chemicals and process aids we produce improve the properties of countless everyday items including foods, paints, detergents, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, paper, and electronics.

The role and its responsibilities
Working from our major site at Rotterdam-Botlek you work closely with project managers to devise the sourcing strategy for CAPEX projects, based on optimal Total Cost Of Ownership (TCO). This involves CAPEX projects around Europe and the role involves regular travel.

Within this context you deliver optimal supplier solutions for the study, design and execution phase of capital projects. In particular you help to establish the project budget as you source potential suppliers and manage a RFx process in order to develop a supply base with the optimum service level at the lowest possible TCO.

To achieve this you ensure feedback on performance of current suppliers while applying your know-how to the collection and analysis of key cost drivers, market dynamics and issues, and areas for innovation. In doing so, you provide solid market information for decision-making, and reliable, up-to-date information to internal clients.

Further, you negotiate and implement contracts to obtain the products and services and ensure performance and savings targets. This involves analyzing all supplier recommended price changes and negotiating, implementing and managing supply agreements and contracts. You are then responsible for tracking and tracing contracted savings.

At all times you take into account the input of the relevant functions and operate in line with internal clients and the policies of (key) supplier management. A further task is to maintain relationships with vendors and contractors, establishing sustainable partnerships and maintaining an approved supplier database including performance monitoring and resolving structural supply issues.

Finally, you define, develop and implement QHSE management towards vendors, promoting and safeguarding the safety policy and driving sustainability initiatives.

Candidate profile
To apply for this position you must possess the following attributes:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in a technical or business subject;
  • At least a few years of relevant work experience, ideally including technical procurement in an international environment;
  • Ability to sell ideas, concepts and programs while challenging engineers to explore alternative concepts, working in a broad direction under minimal supervision;
  • Highly analytical with the advanced communication, interpersonal and influencing skills necessary to work within a team;
  • Experience of systems (SAP/SRM) and reporting;
  • A high standard of written and spoken Dutch and English.
